Hike Through Time: Geology of GCSNA for Kids (DATE HAS CHANGED!!)

Did you know that long ago dinosaurs roamed GCSNA and the beach was only minutes away?  Kids ages 10 - 15 may join Friends of Government Canyon volunteers on a special WEEKDAY guided hike to explore the aquifer, geology and dinosaurs of GCSNA. 

Who Is Invited

Open to ages 10 through 15 and their accompanying adults.  Minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian. Participants must be capable of hiking a total of 5 miles; approximately 4 hours; over rugged terrain with some elevation gain.  

Registration & Fees

Registration is required for BOTH the school child AND his/her accompanying adult.  Only those registered will be allowed on the hike.  Sorry, no group registrations.  Natural Area entry fees apply; stop at the Entrance Fee Booth to self-pay/register. 

When & Where to Meet

Arrive by 7:45 a.m. Meet at the Exhibit Gallery next to the Visitor's Center.  Plan ahead, as the Natural Area often experiences heavy visitation and wait time at the fee booth.

What to Wear & Bring

Dress for the weather; wear sturdy footwear, sunscreen, and a hat.  Bring at least TWO liters of water per person and a snack.   

Requirements

Group size is limited to 20.  No pets please.  Minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian. To reduce human impact on the Natural Area, please follow the Leave No Trace principles of outdoor ethics.   

Cancellations

This program is subject to cancellation.  On inclement mornings, check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055 after 7:30 am, or by going to the GCSNA twitter feed or the Friends of Government Canyon Facebook page.
