Join Friends of Government Canyon volunteers on a hike to see birds that are wintering in Government Canyon State Natural Area. Learn about the fun and excitement of bird watching; including the basics on the use of binoculars and Bird Field Guides, as well as some techniques for successful bird watching outdoors.
Who is Invited
Open to ages 8 and older; minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian. Participants should be able to hike over rugged but beautiful trails with a fair amount of elevation gain.
Registration & Fees
Registration required for EACH participant. Sorry, no group reservations. All Natural Area entry fees apply; stop at the Fee Booth to self-pay/register.
When & Where to Meet
Arrive by 7:45 am. Meet near the rainwater harvesting tower next to the Visitor's Center. Plan ahead, as the Natural Area often experiences heavy visitation and there may be wait time at the fee booth.
What to Wear & Bring
Dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a pair of ours. Bring at least a liter of water and a snack if you like.
Requirements
Group size is limited to 14. No pets please. Minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian. To reduce human impact on the Natural Area, please follow the Leave No Trace principles of outdoor ethics.

Programs are subject to cancellation. On inclement mornings, check trail conditions by calling GCSNA’s main office at 210-688-9055 after 7:30AM, or by going to the GCSNA twitter feed or the Friends of Government Canyon Facebook page .
