The outdoors at night can seem a little spooky, unless you know what all those strange thumps, rustles and buzzes are. Come play a game with us to learn some of our common wildlife sounds, then take a short ranger-led night hike.
Who is Invited
This activity is open to ages 5 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.
This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.
Registration, Day Passes & Cancellation
Reservations required! Reserve your spot via the registration link below. Registration opens on Saturday two weeks prior to the event and closes at noon the Thursday before the event. Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Day passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit.
This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check Natural Area conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or visit one of GCSNA’s social media pages below.
When & Where to Meet
We'll start in the Exhibit Gallery (the screened structure right next to the Visitor Center) and take a short night hike. Lot A or B will have the closest parking. The parking lot and path to the Gallery are paved and near an accessible restroom. The program includes both a seated activity and a short hike. After a night sounds program and guessing game, we'll take a 0.5-1.0 mile hike on the Discovery Trail, which has a compacted crushed granite surface.
What To Wear & Bring
Dress for hiking outdoors. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 1 liter of water per person.
If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.
