Hiking and Backpacking Basics

Discover what you’ve been missing! Learn to get away from it all by preparing for day-trips or weeklong expeditions, then start exploring your own special paradise on foot. Class covers essential equipment, hiking safety, and all questions raised by participants, plus you’ll learn about some great places to hike using your new-found knowledge.

Who is Invited

Open to ages 12 and older; minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

When & Where to Meet

Arrive no later than 1:15PMMeet in the Exhibit Gallery by the main Visitor Center.. The clinic starts promptly at 1:30PM.

What to Wear & Bring

Class is held in an open-air building so please dress for the weather; bring water (1 liter per person), and a snack if you like.

Requirements

Reservations required. No pets please. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. 

To reduce human impact on the Natural Area, please follow the Leave No Trace principles of outdoor ethics.

Registration, Fees & Cancellation

Registration is required! Group size is limited. Registration opens the Saturday two weeks prior to the event and closes at noon the Thursday before the event. Sorry, no group reservations. Natural Area entry fees apply.
