Join Canyon volunteers on a hike into the Backcountry of Government Canyon SNA in an attempt to observe this species whose world-wide nesting grounds are found only in Texas!
We will use the Joe Johnston Route as the core of the hike and may explore the Twin Oaks and/or Wildcat Canyon trails for Golden-cheeks, depending on the interests and abilities of the group. This outing will take place over rugged, rough ground with moderate elevation gains.
Who is Invited
Open to ages 12 and older; any participants under 18 years must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. Registration/reservations required! Sorry, no group registrations; no pets please.
When & Where to Meet
Arrive no later than 7:45AM. Meet at the Visitors Center near the rainwater harvesting tower. The Natural Area front gates open at 7:00AM; plan to be at the Visitor Center and ready to go no later than 7:45AM. The hike starts promptly at 8:00AM.
What to Wear & Bring
Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, hat, sunscreen, and bring at least two liters of water per person.
Requirements
No pets please. Participants under 18 years must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. Participants should be able to hike over rugged, rough ground with moderate elevation gains.
To reduce human impact on the Natural Area, please follow the Leave No Trace principles of outdoor ethics.
Registration, Fees & Cancellation
Registration is required for this hike. Group size is limited to the first 12 that register. Registration opens on Saturday two weeks prior to the event and closes at noon the Thursday before the event. Natural Area entry fees apply.
