Girl Scouts Love State Parks -- Animal Safari

  • Government Canyon Old Galm Road San Antonio, TX, 78254 United States (map)

Start off the new school year with an adventure! Come join us at Government Canyon to celebrate Girl Scouts Love State Parks weekend. Bring your troop out for a self-paced, interactive safari hike on the Savannah Loop trail where your troop will search for and learn about native Texas animals and even get to pet their fur. Test your animal knowledge as you follow clues to try and discover what animal waits for you around the next corner. Make a headband to turn yourself into your favorite local animal. Bring your own lunches and enjoy a troop picnic in the woods around the playscape after your hike and practice your troop’s favorite songs and skits in our Amphitheater space. What better way to bring everyone back together after summer vacation?

To register, sign up here and then go to reserveamerica.com to make advanced day-use reservations for your group. This event is free with standard admission to the natural area ($6/person, children 12 and under are free). Please plan to carpool as much as possible since parking space is limited.

The event will begin at 8:30am and will remain set up until around 11am. Hike length- 1.85 miles (longer hiking options available). Estimated hiking time- 2 hours. This event will start in Parking Lot C (where the Front Country Trailhead is located). In the event of trail closures due to rain, this event will be moved to the Visitor’s Center area and Discovery Trail.

Be Prepared: Arrive early to beat the heat and make sure that everyone has sunscreen on and plenty of water with them.

Volunteering? If your troop is interested in volunteering to help clean up trash from the Natural Area as part of the day’s events, contact Resource Specialist Theresa Edwards (Theresa.Edwards@tpwd.texas.gov) to coordinate.
