It's hard to imagine, but our location was ocean-side property 100 million years ago. How do we know? Government Canyon is home to fossil tracks from two different dinosaurs, a sauropod and a theropod who left tracks along a muddy beach which is now preserved as rock. Take a hike to see the tracks and learn what we know about them so far.

Though the hike is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area apply. To save time at the Fee Booth and ensure entrance on crowded days, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass. Day passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit.
Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.
This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by going to the GCSNA twitter feed or the Government Canyon State Natural Area Facebook page.
When & Where to Meet

Dress for hiking outdoors. Wear layers that can be taken on or off as the day's weather changes. Wear sturdy, well-broken-in hiking shoes or boots. Sunscreen and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and a light, packable lunch. We'll stop at lunch time for a trail-side picnic.
