Start the new year with a leisurely hike at Government Canyon State Natural Area with the Friends of Government Canyon.

We’ll hike the historic Joe Johnston Route from its trailhead to the turn-off for Wildcat Canyon Trail and return the same way. This hike is about 2 miles long and will have some slight elevation change with fairly rocky conditions.

Who is Invited

All ages welcome; minors must be accompanied by their legal guardian. Children must be able to walk the distance or be carried by an adult. Note that the trail is NOT suitable for strollers. No pets please.

If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.

Registration, Fees, Day Pass & Cancellation

Though the hike is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area apply.

To save time at the Fee Booth and ensure entrance on crowded days, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader between 8:30 and 8:45AM.

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation.  Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA’s main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA twitter feed or the Government Canyon State Natural Area Facebook page.
