First Day Hike: Family Friendly Morning Hike

  • 12861 Galm Road San Antonio, TX, 78254 United States (map)

Join dedicated volunteers on a FUN and leisurely family-friendly hike on the Savannah Loop trail. Participants will learn about nature, wildlife, native plants, and whatever else the kiddos find along the way!

Activity distance will be a little over 2.0 miles on a mostly flat dirt and rock trail. Strollers are not advised but smaller children can be carried in a child carrier backpack.

Who is Invited

This hike is intended for parents, grandparents or legal guardians with their children. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.

This is a public program intended for families so if you are looking for an adult hike, there are several others listed on our website. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.

Fees, Day Pass & Cancellation

Though the hike is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area apply.

To save time at the Fee Booth and ensure entrance on crowded days, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader between 8:30 and 8:45AM.

This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation.  Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA’s main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA twitter feed or the Government Canyon State Natural Area Facebook page.
