Junior Ranger Academy

  • 12861 Galm Road San Antonio, TX, 78254 United States (map)

Take a hike, make wildlife observations, use magnifiers to search for decomposers, and learn to Leave No Trace as we complete activities that will result in young rangers being sworn in as TPWD Junior Rangers. We’ll walk about one mile and work together on activities in our journals.

Who is Invited

This activity is best for ages 6 thru 12. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

This is a public program intended for families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.

Registration, Fees, Day Passes & Cancellation

Registration/reservations are NOT required! Though the hike is free, all Natural Area entry fees apply.

To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass .

When & Where to Meet

This activity meets at the Group Picnic Pavilion near the Visitor Center. Lots A & B will be the closest parking. The Pavilion has a concrete floor, and there are accessible walkways leading to it from the parking lot. We will use the Discovery Trail, which has a compacted crushed granite surface.

Please arrive on time. Late arrivals may be asked to take a self-guided hike and do the Junior Ranger activities on their own.

What to Wear & Bring

Dress for hiking outdoors, in layers that can be added or removed as the weather changes. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and a snack.
