Do you ever find yourself stepping outside to take a closer look at the fascinating critters attracted to the light coming through your window on summer nights? If so, this is the walk for you!
Who is Invited
This activity is open to ages 5 and up and includes both a short hike and time spent with experts at our light traps. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.
This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.
Registration, Fees, Day Passes
Reservations are required! Registration opens on Saturday two weeks prior to the event and closes at noon the Thursday before the event.
Though the activity is free, all Natural Area entry fees apply. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass . Day passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit. Please note: reserving a Day Pass is not the same as making a program reservation!
When & Where to Meet
We'll start in the Group Picnic Pavilion. Lot A will have the closest parking. The parking lot and path to the pavilion are paved and near an accessible restroom. The Discovery Trail has a packed granite surface. We'll hike no more than one mile, and likely less.
What to Wear & Bring
Dress for hiking outdoors. Comfortable shoes, insect repellent (ironic, right?) and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 1 liter of water per person. You may want to bring a blanket or portable chair to sit on.
accessibility
This activity is somewhat wheelchair-friendly. There is a paved path leading from the parking lots to the Picnic Pavilion, a distance of about 120'. The Pavilion is near an accessible restroom. We will take a short hike (less than 1 mile) on the Discovery Trail, which has a crushed granite surface.
If other ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.
