Shade Tree Journaling

  • 12861 Galm Road San Antonio, TX, 78254 United States (map)

Would you like to explore some techniques for improving memory, expressing creativity, building scientific skills, and increasing your connection to nature? Journaling regularly can do all this and more. We’ll help you get started with artist-quality tools, a variety of journaling prompts, and a non-judgmental, sharing atmosphere. And we've got an excellent supply of shady trees to shelter us from the sun.

Who is Invited

This activity is open to ages 10 and up and includes both a seated activity and a (very) short hike. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

If ADA assistance is required, please email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance. This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.

Registration, Fees, Day Passes

Registration is NOT required! Though the activity is free, all Natural Area entry fees apply.

To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass . Day passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit.

When & Where to Meet

Park in Lot A or B and meet at the Visitor Center. After an introduction, we will seek journaling locations under shady oak trees. There is an accessible restroom nearby.

What to Wear & Bring

Dress for hiking outdoors. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 1 liter of water per person.

We will provide colored pencils and sketchpads, but you will need to bring a blanket or portable chair to sit on while journaling. You are welcome to bring your own art supplies if you’d like.
