Explore the Canyon

Knowledgeable guides will discuss the flora, fauna, natural and cultural history of Government Canyon State Natural Area. Hike recurs most months, length of hike and interpretive topic(s) will vary depending on the group. Distance will be between 2 to 5 miles over easy to moderate terrain.

Who is Invited

Open to ages 10 and above; participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian; no pets please. The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.

This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.

Registration & Fees

Program reservations are NOT required for this hike. Though the hike is free, all Natural Area entry fees apply.

To save time at the Fee Booth on crowded days and ensure entrance, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.

When & Where to Meet

Meet at the Rock Garden beside the Visitor’s Center. Open to the first 15 who check in at the Rock Garden between 7:30 and 7:45 AM. The hike starts promptly at 8:00 AM.

What to Wear & Bring

Dress for hiking outdoors. Comfortable shoes/boots, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat recommended. Wear layers that can be added or removed as weather conditions change. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and snacks.

Cancellation

This program is subject to cancellation.  Should there be inclement weather, please check Natural Area conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to one of GCSNA’s social media pages listed below.
