Big Sit-Great Texas Birding Classic

  • 12861 Galm Road San Antonio, TX, 78254 United States (map)

The Fellowship of the Wings (sponsored by the Friends of Government Canyon) will be counting birds from our designated 50' circle near the head of the Discovery Trail. Just stop by to see what we're seeing and hearing, or plan to stay for a little while and assist. Birders of all skill levels are welcome! We'll have an info table set up and experts on hand to share birding how-to tips with you.

This is the 29th year for the Great Texas Birding Classic

Who is Invited

This activity is stationary (no hike). While birders of all ages are welcome, the activity is best for ages 8 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or guardian. No pets please.

Registration & Fees

Reservations are NOT required for this activity. Though the event is free, all Natural Area entry fees apply.

To save time at the Fee Booth on crowded days and ensure entrance, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass. Day passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit.

When & Where to Meet

You'll find our team just off the sidewalk between the Visitor Center and the Discovery Trailhead. Lot A or B will be the closest parking. The parking lot and nearby paths are paved and near an accessible restroom.

What to Wear & Bring

Dress for hiking outdoors, in layers that can be added or removed as the weather changes. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat are recommended. If you plan to stay for a little while, please bring a portable chair. We will have some binoculars to share.

If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.
