Spend a morning reading and composing poetry in nature while hiking Government Canyon State Natural Area.
The event begins with a short discussion about and reading of poetry. Then, we’ll hike the 1.25 mile Discovery Trail, stopping and writing along the way.
Who is Invited
This hike is open to ages 14 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

Fees, Day Pass & Cancellation
Though the program is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area apply. The Natural Area can be very busy! To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass . Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 10 participants to check-in with the hike leader.

When & Where to Meet
Meet at the Rainwater Tower outside the Visitor Center. Lots A & B will have the closest parking. The hike will leave promptly at 9:30 am, so please plan to arrive a little early. The hike on the Discovery Trail will be about 1.25 miles on a compacted crushed granite surface.
What to Wear & Bring
Dress for hiking outdoors. Wear layers that can be taken on or off as the day's weather changes. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes and bring a journal for writing. Bring a snack, at least 1 liter of water per person and a towel or pad for sitting along the trail.
