Intro to Hiking for Women

Want to spend more time in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, but unsure how to begin? Hiking is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the outdoors and provides a great source of relaxation and physical fitness.

Hiking is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the outdoors and provides a great source of relaxation and physical fitness. With a little planning and preparation, hiking is an activity that almost anyone can do! Absolutely ZERO experience required – in fact encouraged! We’ll spend approximately one hour learning the basics, providing suggestions for what to pack, and answering all of your questions. Afterwards, you’ll test your new skills on a short and easy hike (approximately 2 miles).

Who is Invited

Open to women ages 12 and older; minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. Open to the first 15 who check in at the amphitheater. No pets please.

This is a public program intended for women only. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.

Registration, Fees, Day Pass & Cancellation

Registration is NOT required for this activity. Though the event is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area apply.

Plan to arrive early as mornings can be very busy! To save time at the Fee Booth on crowded days and ensure entrance, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass .

When & Where to Meet

Park in Lot C, and meet at the Amphitheater. Open to the first 15 who check in at the Amphitheater between 8:30 and 8:45 AM. The program starts promptly at 9:00 AM.

How to prepare

Dress for hiking outdoors. Comfortable, broken-in, shoes/boots, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat recommended. Wear layers that can be added or removed as weather conditions change. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and snacks. The hike will be over rough, rocky terrain.

Seating is on limestone blocks in an open-air Amphitheater. A blanket, towel, or stadium seat is suggested to make sitting more comfortable.

There is a gravel path leading from the parking lot to the amphitheater, a distance of about 120'. The amphitheater is near an accessible restroom. The hike will be over rough, rocky terrain.
