Explore the Canyon

Knowledgeable guides discuss the flora, fauna, natural and cultural history of Government Canyon State Natural Area. Hike length and interpretive topic(s) will vary depending on the group. Distance will be between 2 to 5 miles over easy to moderate terrain.

Who is Invited

Hike is open to ages 10 and older. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time. 

Registration, Fees & Day Passes

Program reservations are NOT required! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.
Though the hike is free, all Natural Area entry fees apply. Please arrive early as Saturdays can be very busy. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass . Day passes can be reserved up to one month ahead of your planned visit. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does NOT guarantee a spot for you on the hike!

When & Where to Meet

Meet at the Rock Garden beside the Visitor Center. Open to the first 15 who check in at the Rock Garden between 7:30 and 7:45 AM. The hike starts promptly at 8:00 AM.

What to Wear & Bring

Dress for hiking outdoors; comfortable shoes/boots, sunscreen, bug spray and a hat are recommended. Wear layers that can be added or removed as weather conditions change. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and snacks.
