It's hard to imagine, but our location was ocean-side property 100 million years ago. How do we know? Government Canyon is home to fossil tracks from two different dinosaurs, a sauropod and a theropod who left tracks along a muddy beach which is now preserved as rock. Take a hike to see the tracks and learn what we know about them so far.
Who is Invited
This hike is open to ages 8 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please. Be aware that this hike includes some elevation gain and loss over rough, rocky topography. The hike to the tracks is 2.5 miles one-way, making a 5-mile round trip. The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.
This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.
If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.
Registration, Fees, Day Pass & Cancellation
Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area apply. To save time at the Fee Booth and ensure entrance on crowded days, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass. Day passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit.
Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.
This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA’s main office at 210-688-9055, or visit one of the GCSNA social media pages listed below.

What to Wear & Bring
Dress for hiking outdoors. Wear layers that can be taken on or off as the day's weather changes. Wear sturdy, well-broken-in hiking shoes or boots. Sunscreen and a hat are recommended. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person and a snack.
