The Protected Habitat Area is only open to hikers from September-February each year. Enjoy views and trails only a small percentage of Government Canyon visitors experience. We will begin promptly at 8:00 am. We plan to be back at the Visitor Center at 3:00 pm, depending on walking speed and other variables. Be ready to be out all day.
Who is Invited
Participants must be at least 14 years of age and physically able to hike 12-13 miles over broken, rocky terrain with a good portion of elevation gain and loss. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

Fee, Day pass & cancellation
Though the hike is free, all Natural Area entry fees apply. To save time at the Fee Booth on crowded days and ensure entrance, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass. Please note: reserving a Day Pass does not guarantee a spot for you on the hike! The hike is limited to the first 15 participants to check-in with the hike leader.

When & Where to Meet
Meet at the Rainwater Tower next to the Visitors’ Center and be ready to go no later than 7:45AM. Please check-in with the hike leader between 7:30 AM and 7:45 AM. The hike starts promptly at 8:00AM.
What to Wear & Bring
Dress in layers appropriate to the weather. Carry at least 3 liters of water per person, snacks, lunch, sunscreen, hat, and raingear. Wear sturdy, well-broken-in hiking shoes or boots. This is not a hike for new boots.
