First Day Hikes -- What a View!

Join us on the first day of 2023 for a hike that leads to an amazing overlook where you can get a real sense of the canyon that is our namesake.

Who is Invited

Open to ages 13 and older; minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets please.

Registration, Fees, Day Pass & Cancellation

Registration is required for this hike. Hiking group size is limited. Sorry, no group registrations. Registration opens on Saturday, two weeks prior to the event, and closes at noon, the Thursday before the event. Though the hike is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area apply.

To save time at the Fee Booth and ensure entrance on crowded days, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass. SPECIAL NOTE: Reserving a Day Pass is NOT the same as making a program reservation.

This hike is subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by going to the GCSNA twitter feed or the Government Canyon State Natural Area Facebook page.

When & Where to Meet

Arrive no later than 12:45PM. Meet at the Visitors Center by the rainwater harvesting tower.

The Natural Area can be very busy! The Natural Area front gates open at 7:00AM; plan to be at the Visitor Center and ready to go no later than 12:45PM. The hike starts promptly at 1:00PM.

What to Wear & Bring

Dress for hiking outdoors; sunscreen and hat recommended. Wear sturdy footwear appropriate for rough trails (no sandals or open-toed footwear please), bring at least one (1) liter of water per person and a snack if you like.

Details

Participants should be able to hike approximately 4.0 miles with a fair amount of elevation gain over rocky, rugged terrain.
