Painted Bunting Walk

  • 12861 Galm Road San Antonio, TX, 78254 United States (map)

Catch them while you can...painted buntings are most common in South Texas from April-August. Join a park ranger to (hopefully*) experience these amazing birds in person. If possible, bring a pair of binoculars, but we will have a limited number of loaners on hand.

*Note that we will scout locations in advance but can't guarantee everyone will see a painted bunting!

Who is Invited

Ages 10 and up. Minors must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. No pets, please. This hike is limited to the first 12 people to check in with the ranger, so plan to arrive on time. Be aware that this hike includes some elevation gain and loss over rough, rocky topography. We'll hike around 3.5 miles.

This is a public program intended for individuals or families. If you would like to bring a group for a program at Government Canyon, please contact the Park Interpreter at Lisa.Cole@tpwd.texas.gov to schedule at a different time.

Program reservations are NOT required! Though the hike is free, all Natural Area entry fees apply.

To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a Day Pass .
